Roskamp Football Era
Gresham Roskamp was the second head football coach in Ballard’s school history. Mr. Roskamp served four years as the head football coach at Ballard (1960-61-62-63). During his reign, Ballard’s program reached new heights. In his first season as head coach (1960), the team finished 3-5-1. The groundwork had been laid for the next three years. The 1961 team finished 8-0. This is the only team in Ballard football history to go undefeated. The 1962 team finished their season 7-1. During a stretch between 1961 and 1962 Ballard won 14 consecutive games. The 1963 team spent most of the season ranked #1 in the state. Their only loss was the last game of the season to Indianola which was a much larger school. Ballard continued it’s #1 ranking even after the loss.
Ron Elder was Ballard’s first 1,000 yard rusher. During the 1962 season, Ron rushed for 1,033 yards and during the 1963 season, he rushed for 1,123 yards.
Most points scored by Ballard was 68 – 0 over United Community in 1962, by accident, not by design.
