Transportation Staff Benefits Summary

Bus drivers are divided into two groups for benefit purposes:

  • Bus Drivers: bus drivers that drive regularly scheduled routes, such as a regular bus route or special education route – see below
  • Substitute Bus Drivers: drivers that work on an as-needed basis only – no benefits are provided

Insurance Coverage

Employees that are regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours may be eligible for insurance benefits. Contact the Administration Office for more information.

Employee Leave

Sick Leave

Employees earn sick leave based on the number of hours they are scheduled to work per day. Employees may use sick leave for their own illness or injury.

  • Employees in their first year of employment with Ballard will receive 10 days of sick leave.
  • Employees in their second year of employment with Ballard will receive 11 days of sick leave.
  • Employees in their third year of employment with Ballard will receive 12 days of sick leave.
  • Employees in their fourth year of employment with Ballard will receive 13 days of sick leave.
  • Employees in their fifth year of employment with Ballard will receive 14 days of sick leave.
  • Employees who have completed five years of employment with Ballard will receive 15 days of sick leave.

Family Leave

In case of illness or accident which requires a member of an employee’s immediate family to be in communication with a licensed physician, the employee may be granted up to five (5) days leave with pay, deducted from accumulated sick leave. Immediate family shall be limited to the employee’s spouse, child, parent, sibling, grandchild or grandparent. The five (5) days shall not accumulate from year to year.

Personal Business Leave

Employees are provided two (2) personal business days per school year. These days cannot be taken as vacation and must be used for business matters that cannot be taken care of outside the normal work day. One (1) day of this leave may be carried forward from one school year to the next, with a maximum of three (3) personal business leave days for any given year. Requests for personal business leave must be made through your supervisor with three days advance notice requested.

Bereavement Leave

In the event of a death in the family of an employee (father, stepfather, mother, stepmother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, spouse, child, stepchild, sister, brother, legal dependent, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, aunt, uncle, grandparent, grandchild, niece, nephew), the employee shall be granted a leave totaling as many days as necessary, but not more than five (5) days, with pay for attendance at the funeral and for other purposes directly arising out of said death. Bereavement leave will not be deducted from the employee’s accumulated sick leave. The employee shall be granted one (1) additional day per year, with pay, for attendance at the funeral of a person not listed above.

Jury Duty

An employee required to serve as a juror must submit certification of service for time served. When released from duty, the employee must report to work for the remainder of the day. Pay received for jury service, except mileage and parking allowances, must be paid to the District.

Other Leave

Employees are allowed to request additional days of leave beyond the set standards. The Superintendent has the authority to grant additional days and these days will be deducted from the employee’s earned sick leave accumulation. Each request will be considered on an individual basis.

Unpaid Leave

Employees may request extended leave without pay by submitting a written request to your supervisor. Each request will be considered on an individual basis.

Clarification

A work “day” is equal to the scheduled work for an employee on a given date. For example, a Bus Driver normally scheduled to drive both AM & PM routes requests, and is approved, to take 1 day of sick leave for personal illness. This employee will be paid for both AM & PM routes for the day using 1 day’s allotment of sick leave. Paid leave does not cover extra-curricular trips. If this Bus Driver had intended to drive an athletic trip on the day of personal illness, no trip pay would be issued.

Training Time

Classified employees will be paid $7.75 per hour for courses required by Ballard outside of normal work hours.
