New Reading Interventions Being Used at Ballard West and East

Back in September a group of special education teachers and title teachers from Ballard East and Ballard West went to a training in Arlington, Iowa to learn about the 95% Group Reading Intervention Materials. At the training, we learned new strategies to improve student’s reading; focusing on phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding.

The 95% Group consists of professional development that assists school districts on improving reading achievement through implementation of MTSS. The materials from the 95% Group provide literacy diagnostic assessments and provides specific instruction in the areas of student deficit.

Since implementing the 95% Group training, with our special education students, we have noticed a huge gain in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding. Students’ overall reading scores have increased along with students’ confidence in themselves.

Since our initial training in September we have had two follow-up trainings. The rest of the K-2 teaching staff have also received training on the 95% Group intervention materials and routines. With all staff trained, we are able to provide targeted reading interventions with quality materials and effective intervention routines for ALL students at West who benefit from extra support.
